‘APIIT Sri Lanka’
is renowned for adhering to high standards and quality in
higher education. APIIT Sri Lanka offers Staffordshire University,
UK degree programmes in Computing/ IT and Business Management
in Colombo. APIIT Sri Lanka’s principal purpose is to
produce internationally recognized computing and business
professionals who will meet the demands of the industry and
commerce and contribute to the socio-economic development
of the country. To achieve these objectives, APIIT Sri Lanka

Programmes
APIIT degree programmes are internal degree
programmes and the degree certificates awarded by Staffordshire
University are identical to those awarded to internal students
studying in the UK. As a higher education institute offering
British degree programmes in Sri Lanka, APIIT Sri Lanka
comes under the purview of the Quality Assurance Agency
for Higher Education (QAA) of the United Kingdom. The Quality
Assurance Agency is an independent body that evaluates British
University awards with a view to safeguarding public interest
in sound education standards.
The academic programmes conducted by APIIT
have been audited by the Quality Assurance Agency of the
United Kingdom. An audit team from the Quality Assurance
Agency visited APIIT Sri Lanka in May 2004 to appraise APIIT
facilities and programmes as part of quality assurance of
Staffordshire University degree programmes. The team inspected
the facilities, examined the teaching processes and procedures
in relation to the Computing Degree Programmes and interviewed
the students and staff. The audit report, which is now available
on the websites of QAA and APIIT Sri Lanka, has highly commended
the academic standards maintained and the quality of learning
opportunities provided to students at APIIT. The audit team
has concluded that the student experience at APIIT Sri Lanka
is comparable to that provided in British universities.
APIIT Diploma and Higher Diploma Programmes
are quality assured by Staffordshire University; UK; these
provide a pathway to enter higher levels of relevant foreign
degree programmes. APIIT Sri Lanka provides the option of
transferring to an affiliated university in the UK or Australia
after one year or two years of study in Colombo Students
have the opportunity of choosing from over twenty one affiliated
universities in the UK and Australia to complete their degree.
APIIT Degree Programmes are conducted as per the prescribed
standards set by the university. There is often close monitoring
of the facilities and the conduct of the programmes by the
Staffordshire University and APIIT Malaysia to assure that
the required quality standards are maintained.
Staffordshire University
Staffordshire University is a major player
in international education, and has its origins in the early
1900s. The University has a student population of approximately
12,000 full-time and 3000 part-time students. In addition,
there are some 5,000 students studying overseas on Staffordshire
University awards in China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong,
Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Greece, Spain and France. The
university is ranked 3rd in a league table for ‘Ranking
of University and College Teacher Training Providers’
as published by the Centre for Education and Employment
Research, University of Buckingham, U.K.
APIIT Lanka Profile
There is no provision under the Universities
Act to set up private universities or higher education institutes
in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, private higher education institutes,
similar to international schools, are registered under the
Companies Act and those with foreign collaboration are registered
as BOI approved enterprises under the BOI Act.
The Asia Pacific Institute of Information
Technology Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. (APIIT Sri Lanka) was incorporated
in September 1999 with Board of Investment approval to offer
tertiary education in IT and Business Studies under a franchise
arrangement with the Asia Pacific Institute of Information
Technology – Malaysia and Staffordshire University,
UK. And as the quality of academic provision and standards
within APlIT ¬Sri Lanka remains strictly within the
purview of APIIT Malaysia and Staffordshire University,
UK, these institutions have set in place rigorous quality
assurance procedures and APIIT-Lanka is totally committed
to conform to the prescribed quality standards.
Since commencement, APIIT Sri Lanka has
attracted students (full-time and part-time) from many parts
of the country to follow the three main degree programmes,
namely, BSc (Hons) in Computing, BSc (Hons) in Business
Information Technology and BA (Hons) in Business Administration.
APIIT Sri Lanka takes pride in having produced over 100
graduates from the first two graduations in December 2003
and December 2004, who are acknowledged as dynamic professionals
geared to take on the challenges of the industry and commerce.
Over the five years of its existence,
the institution’s clear focus on its primary objectives
