The 82nd District of Toastmasters International has honoured APIIT with the ENHANCING EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT award in recognition of the support it has rendered over the years to the Toastmasters movement. This award, presented by TM Ajantha Jayawardena, the Programme Quality Director of District 82, at the annual TM conference “Ovation 2017”, celebrated APIIT’s efforts in enhancing communication skills by supporting the Toastmasters programme.
The Toastmasters International Speech Contest is the largest of its kind attracting participants from all over the world. The contest starts at the club level and goes up to the District 82 International Speech Contest. As in several past occasions, this year saw APIIT TM Amr Akram representing the APIIT Toastmasters Club as well as clubs of Division J, emerging a semi-finalist at this prestigious speech contest.
Organized by the home division of the APIIT Toastmasters Club, Division J of District 82 of Toastmasters International, the Encore 2017 islandwide interclub drama competition attracted participants from all over the country. Of the 15 teams that took part, the 5 most talented teams reached the finals and APIIT Toastmasters Club emerged runners-up among them at the Grand Finale of Encore 2017 held in July.
Member of the APIIT Toastmasters club, TM Namal Gunapala was one of the winners of the Silent Hero award, for services rendered and support extended towards the club helping them to achieve greatness. This programme was initiated by Division J of District 82 of Toastmasters International, and its goal is to recognize the ordinary members who contribute towards the greatness of the club by providing their continued and unwavering support.

APIIT Toastmasters Club member TM Nuski Sally won the divisional international speech championship and represented Sri Lanka at Ovation 2016. Nuski Qualified from Club to Area to Division, beating great and experienced speakers from well-established clubs and other corporates. It makes him APIIT TMCs first ever District Level champion. Currently the APIIT TMC has raised its Membership to 28 members who are dedicated and passionate to better themselves.
APIIT e-Sports team comprising Ashwin De Zoysa, Munthasir Shiraz, Isuru Lokuge, Aayon de Alwis, Steve Kurunduhewa, Kaushika alahpapperuma, Ijaz Mafahir, Akeel Amerdeen, and Raoul Rutnam, won the first ever competitive inter-university e-Sports Tournament in Sri Lanka, sponsored by Dialog and held by Gamer.lk. Conducted in a knock-out format, the tournament was the country’s first ever e-Sports championship designed to enable gamers from universities island-wide to compete and represent their institutes. Throughout the two day tournament, APIIT showed a strong game face in the areas of “Dota 2, FIFA 16 and Project Cars”. Apart from the e-Sports Championship Trophy, they also bagged many titles and awards.
The APIIT Law School Moot Team has been the champion or the runner-up at the Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition since 2011. On Thursday the 3rd of September, 2015, the Team emerged national champions for the second time at this most prestigious mooting competition. The APIIT Moot Team, took on other mooting giants in the region when they represented Sri Lanka in the Regional Round of the Henry Dunant Mooting Court Competition, held in Lahor, Pakistan, on the 1st and the 2nd of December 2015. They are now busy rehearsing in preparation for the Hong Kong Mooting Championship to be held early next year.
The APIIT Toastmasters shined once again at the Division C Level Table Topics Speech competition, held this March at the Kingsbury Hotel, for the second year running. Toastmaster Sharanya Sekaram, who also holds the post of Vice President, Public Relations at the club competed against 6 other speakers, all of whom were winners at their club and area to claim the 1st runner up prize. APIIT Toastmasters is one of the youngest clubs in Sri Lanka and has regularly seen members placing at almost every competition they take part in. Last year at the Division Table Topics Competition, they secured both first and second place and in October at the Division Evaluation Competition, were placed first runner up.APIIT is the first private higher education institute to initiate a Toastmasters’ Club. The APIIT Toastmasters, with young and enthusiastic office bearers has been recognised as a President Distinguished Club during the tenure of 2011/ 2012 and 2012/13. The APIIT Toastmasters’ Club aspires to train individuals to be better speakers and leaders and friends. Helping friends in a fun filled exciting environment aids in fulfilling the core objectives of the club.
APIIT Rugby team emerged as Plate Runners-up at the Inter-University Rugby Sevens 2013 held in January to start this year with a winning note. This event was organised by the Informatics Institute of Technology. Many higher education institutions comprising both state and private sector participated at the tournament. APIIT Rugby team showcased their excellent performance and sporting spirit, during the tournament and battled it out to emerge Plate runners-up at the end.
